The Best Woods for Rustic Furniture
Mesquite, oak, walnut, alder, pine, reclaimed barnwood — what each wood does well, and where each one shines.

Mesquite is the king of Texas rustic furniture. Dense, hard, and warm-toned, with a wild grain that makes every piece one-of-a-kind. It's almost indestructible — ideal for dining tables and coffee tables that see heavy daily use.
Oak is the workhorse. Strong, straight-grained, and forgiving. White oak takes finishes beautifully and resists moisture better than red oak.
Alder is the underrated favorite. Softer than oak, takes stain like a dream, and finishes look more expensive than the wood costs.
Pine is light, soft, and beautiful when distressed. Best in bedrooms and casual rooms — not the right pick for a dining table.
Reclaimed barnwood brings history into the room. Each board carries its own marks. No two pieces are alike — and that's the point.
